New York (AP) New York’s schools have reopened following a series of closures due to the flu pandemic, with some schools seeing a slight uptick in students.
In the latest wave of students who went back to school Tuesday, about 700,000 New Yorkers are back in school, according to the New York State Education Department.
The state also said Wednesday that 1,800 people who have not yet returned to school are now in the hospital, including 732 children who were not admitted to the hospital because of the pandemic.
The state’s health commissioner said at a news conference that about 2,000 of the 2,400 patients were at a hospital for a respiratory infection.
About 730,000 students who have been placed on a waitlist have returned to class.
About 700,00 students were ordered back to class for flu tests, while about 350,000 have been assigned to other classes.
More than 5,000 schools and universities in New England, including schools in Vermont, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Maine, have reopened, including several in cities and towns, including Burlington, Mass., and Northampton, Mass.
